RBMA Block 4: Circular and Ecosystem-Based Planning
4.2 – Building with Nature in River Basin
Understanding natural mechanism and Welang river dynamics. Some lessons learned from the lecture:
- Rivers seek an equilibrium: rivers become unstable if you change a parameter
- Restoring balance, therefore, requires a good understanding of river dynamics, sedimentation and erosion processes
- Good monitoring after completion of works is required as the river may continue to be unstable and additional works may be necessary
- Bringing down flood levels is safer than building dikes
- Upstream is about retaining water, while downstream is about draining water
