Launching in January 2025, the Green Batik Pekalongan Pilot Project is a two-year initiative aimed to transform Pekalongan’s traditional batik industry into a model of sustainability and resilience. Running through January 2027, the project introduces scalable solutions that operate at both the workshop and neighbourhood (kampung) levels—minimising environmental impact, conserving water resources, and supporting Pekalongan’s long-term economic future.
This innovative approach works across three integrated levels:
- Practical Interventions – implementing sustainable water sourcing, usage, and discharge systems, including the use of filters and vertical constructed wetlands for on-site wastewater treatment.
- Sustainable Water Modelling – creating replicable water management models at both workshop and kampung scales to guide future green transitions.
- Collaborative Transformation – engaging “Green Batik Champions,” local authorities, knowledge institutions, and value chain actors to foster systemic and community-led change.
Funded by the Dutch Water Authorities (PwN) through its subsidiary programme, the project is part of a broader effort to align local economic development with international environmental and social goals. It directly contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation) and Goal 11 (sustainable cities and communities).
The resulting model is designed to be affordable and easily replicable, offering a pathway toward cleaner batik production, more sustainable management of scarce freshwater resources, and a healthier environment in Pekalongan. At the same time, it aims to secure economic opportunities for young people and strengthen the long-term resilience of the batik sector, while contributing to the achievement of the 12 Green Batik Goals.
The project is implemented by a diverse consortium comprising The Water Agency, Resilience B.V., Universitas Pekalongan, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, Rietland, and Vitens-Evides International (VEI). Together, we bring local knowledge, technical expertise, and international best practices to benefit the batik communities and the people of Pekalongan.
