5.6 – Irrigation History in East Java

Indonesia has a major influence from the Netherlands in their irrigation system. Throughout the history of irrigation, there have been different kinds of water distribution through canals in Indonesia.

Over time, irrigation challenges in Indonesia are varied. There has been a change in land area for agriculture, water resources, and a decrease in productivity. The transformation in water management is happening due to demographic pressure, climate variability, and land use change, causing water sustainability threats.
