2.3 – Strategic River Basin Planning

A strategy is a long-term plan of action, designed to achieve a particular goal(s). The study of strategic planning begun in 1920s by Harvard business school, as it grew and embraced by the public sector and public management in mid 1980s. Today, strategic planning functions as a tool for local development which conceives strategic interventions that guarantee the quality of life, and economic and social progress

Water stands at the centre of the challenges around food security, economic development, energy generation and climate change. Under these conditions, basin plans need to recognize and be aligned with broader economic development and planning objectives.

Strategic river basin planning aims to create a coherent multidisciplinary approach to managing basin water resources and their users in order to identify and satisfy social, economic and environmental priorities.
